Bowling event supports kids on the spectrum
As reported by Jacqueline Birzon, Half Hollow Hills

| Custom Hills vs. Autism shorts by Mesh Lacrosse |
When tasked with a single community service project for his
bar mitzvah last year, Drew Quinto was determined to affect long-term change.
Rather than signing up for a one-time experience, Quinto and his parents, Paul
and Allison, founded Hills vs. Autism, an organization that promotes tolerance
for children on the autism spectrum.
This year, with the help of his parents and his brother,
Quinto will host the second annual Hills vs. Autism Bowling fundraiser at Commack
Vets Lanes on Friday.
The event, which raised $15,000 last year, fundraises for
various local groups and agencies that provide social and recreational services
for adolescents and teenagers on the spectrum.
The issue hits home for Quinto, who has a close relationship with his older brother, Corey, who is on the autism spectrum.
“We as a family felt there was a need for socialization, and
we thought it would be great to make a donation in that way,” Quinto said, “We
thought socialization because people who donate for autism usually donate toward
research, and at this point there’s no cure, and social programs are important,
so this was really the right place to start. “
Last year, Hills vs. Autism donated a chunk of their
proceeds to bring a challenger lacrosse team all the way from Maryland to play
in a tournament against a Half Hollow Hills–based team. The challenger league
provides students on the spectrum with the chance to participate on a team
sport, a valued opportunity for any child.
Quinto, a member of the Hills East lacrosse team, also
remains active with the local challenger league.
The Quintos have also donated to the Suffolk Y Jewish
Community Center’s theater program, and interactive after school experience for
students to engage with peers over common theatrical interests. Corey has found
his passion in the industry and is an aspiring film critic who can quote movies
along with the most seasoned of critics. Corey has also participated in a
vocational program where he shadowed employees at a local movie theatre,
learning the ins and outs of the industry.
“I’ve seen a change; he gets more excited and positive,” Quinto said of his brother since finding his passion.
The event is set to take place on May 3, from 7-10 p.m., and
will feature raffle items and custom Hills vs. Autism shorts (designed and
produced by Mesh Lacrosse).

Selling shorts for Hurricane Sandy
by Robert Linnehan on 01/07/2013 12:01pm
A local Moorestown couple started a lacrosse apparel business and are selling shorts to benefit the Hurricane Sandy cleanup efforts.
A local Moorestown couple started a lacrosse apparel business and are selling shorts to benefit the Hurricane Sandy cleanup efforts.
Mesh Lax will continue to sell these shorts to benefit cleanup efforts while supplies last.
Jay and Raquel Winkler of Moorestown are extending a successful Hurricane Sandy benefit and selling their extremely popular “Jersey Shore” lacrosse shorts while supplies last.
The Winklers own and operate an online lacrosse merchandise clothing store, Mesh Lacrosse, and have raised more than $6,750 through the sale of their “Jersey Shore” lacrosse shorts to donate to the American Red Cross. The business owners donated the cash to the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts and have announced that they will begin selling the special shorts against on their website.
Jay Winkler said the store had to cease sales of the shorts about two weeks prior to Christmas in order to fill the number of orders that were flowing into the website. All proceeds from the shorts are donated to the Hurricane Sandy relief fund sponsored by the American Red Cross.
Created by Jay and designed by Anthony Peist, the shorts are designed with half of the garment featuring various postcards from shore points throughout New Jersey and the other half featuring a drawing of a boardwalk.
Mesh Lacrosse was the brainchild of Raquel, Jay said, and she officially opened the company just months before Hurricane Sandy slammed into New Jersey. The Winklers are a “lacrosse family,” Jay said, as he and his children all still play the popular sport.
Lacrosse is the fastest growing youth sport in America, he explained, and the Winklers saw an opportunity to jump into a niche market.
“We had launched the company in Sept. 2012, not so long ago, and then the storm came. Not only being a lacrosse family and being heavily into the sport, we’re avid beach goers, I enjoy surfing, so do my kids, and I grew up in a coastal area in Delaware and spent a lot of time at the jersey shore,” Jay said. “When the storm came it hit a nerve, we asked what we could do to help, and it dawned on us that we could design these shorts and donate the profits to the relief effort. It became very popular.”
The company launched the shorts on its website just a few weeks after the hurricane and immediately began to sell them far faster than they could be made, Jay said.
Mesh Lacrosse had to stop selling the special shorts on Nov. 19 in order to ensure that they could be shipped out to customers by Christmas, Jay said, but has since reopened its sales and the shorts can be purchased at the company’s website.
“We don’t have a cutoff date this time, it’s taken on a life of its own and it took us in a different direction because it was such a big hit. I think right now we’re going to let it flow and the orders continue to come in day by day. We’ll probably just make it a regular item in our inventory,” he said.
Mesh Lacrosse has partnered with Ruff Lax in Maple Shade and sells merchandise there as well.
To purchase the shorts, please visit the company’s website at www.meshlax.com.

Lacrosse Magazine» Lax Community Helping With Sandy Relief Effort
As published in Lacrosse Magazine by Corey McLaughlin
The lacrosse community — with hotbeds in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut — was touched directly by Superstorm Sandy last week, and its effects linger. Towns across Long Island, the tri-state area and other shoreline locales in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic were left to cope with the aftermath of a storm that killed more than 100 people and included record flooding that left many homeless and power outages for some that are still ongoing.
Here's just some of the anecdotes of those affected, and links to relief efforts. Share yours in the comments section below or on Twitter @LacrosseMag.
- Boston College's MCLA team traveled to Fairfield, Conn., last weekend to help the family of a teammate whose house was severely flooded by Sandy. Players and the coaching staff gutted parts of the house and helped the neighborhood in general.
"We took out the entire fire floor of both his house and several of his neighbors, as well as cleaned up all kinds of trees that were down across the neighborhood," Boston College assistant coach Michael Maloney said in an email. "Drywall, flooring, doors, casings, furniture, kitchens, you name it, it all had to go. It was a great day for us as a team, and something that I thought might be a great story for the lacrosse community."
- Stevens Institute of Technology is located in Hoboken, N.J., a city across the Hudson River from New York City that was devastated by the storm. Stevens' women's team is selling "Hoboken Strong" t-shirts and sweatshirts with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Hoboken community and relief charities. Stevens' students are among those helping in the massive rescue and recovery effort at the school.
- In Baltimore, Team USA and Boston Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil is guest DJ'ing on Thursday night at Portside Tavern in the city's Canton neighborhood as part of a Sandy relief fundraiser. All of the donations collected at the door will go to Delaware Coast Aid.
- Several equipment and apparel companies have created products whose proceeds will go to relief efforts. Lacrosse.com and STX are selling Lacrosse Recovery Fund t-shirts with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the American Red Cross. Mesh Lacrosse has designed special "Lax for Shore" shorts available here, with proceeds going to the American Red Cross.
- Aftershock Lacrosse, a Pennsylvania-based club team, collected items like clothing, blankets and non-perishable food items this week to donate to Sandy victims.

MoorestownPatch.com» Sales from Lacrosse Shorts Benefit Sandy Victims
By Rob Scott | MoorestownPatch.com
Jay and Raquel Winkler, owners of Mesh Lacrosse, designed the Jersey Shore-themed shorts and will donate 100 percent of the profits to the Red Cross's relief efforts.
When Jay and Raquel Winkler saw the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy, they decided to take their longtime love of the Jersey Shore and their burgeoning lacrosse apparel business and combine the two for a good cause.
“Jay and I are avid beachgoers … We love going to the Jersey Shore, and we were really just devastated by what Hurricane Sandy did,” said Raquel. “When something like this happens, you feel like you want to do something, but you don’t know what to do.”
Earlier this fall, the Winklers launched Mesh Lacrosse, an apparel business specializing in lacrosse shorts with creative designs—which has sort of become a niche market over the last decade, as lacrosse’s popularity has grown in leaps and bounds.
Jay said during a drive to Long Beach Island about a month ago, a friend suggested the Winklers create a pair of Jersey Shore-themed (the location, not the TV show) shorts.
“Then this happened (with Hurricane Sandy) … and we saw these families being affected, devastated,” said Jay. “It just kind of clicked.”
They decided to design the Shore shorts, sell them through Mesh Lacrosse and donate 100 percent of the profits to the American Red Cross’s Sandy relief efforts.
Jay, who serves as the creative director for Idea Lab Marketing in his day job, researched and dreamt up the art, and then handed it off to graphic designer Anthony Peist, who took care of the rest.
“We thought we’d sell them locally,” Jay said, “raise a few hundred dollars.”
But the project has taken off in a way neither Jay nor Raquel anticipated. Besides getting plenty of local interest, they’ve received orders from a host of other states, including California, Indiana, Florida, Massachusetts and North Carolina. Four days in, they’ve already raised approximately $3,000.
“It’s actually a little overwhelming,” said Raquel, principal for Mesh Lacrosse. “It’s just evident, everybody wants to help.”
The shorts (pictured above) are only available until Nov. 19. They can be purchased for $35 through the Mesh Lacrosse website.
“We want to get the money to the people in need as soon as we can,” said Jay.
